From its debut in 1930 to it’s latest edition in 2018, the World Cup Tournament has had about 2500 goals. A little percentage of that comes goals unwittingly, ( some might say wittingly in some cases), scored by players against their teams, 53 to be precise. Some of these goals made a lot of trouble for their scorers. A tainted reputation, hatred of fans, etc. Whenever, however, they were scored, nobody wants to be the player behind them. Some these own goals set undesirable records for their scorers, Croatia’s Mario Mandžukić’s a good example. Ten of the most infamous are compiled in this list. Lists like this will likely continue to grow, as we have more FIFA World Cup Tournaments. Read and enjoy the list. Please remember to tell me what you think in the comments section. 10. The Only Pair Of Teams To Have Scored Own Goals For Each Other
This happened in the match between Mexico and the United States at the 2002 FIFA world cup. The goals were netted by both Jorge Costa Portugal and Jeff Agoos of the United States each for the opposing team, the United States winning 3-2. It is one of the records on this list that may easily be broken
8. Most Own Goals By A Team
Mexico’s best performances in the tournament are reaching the quarterfinals both in 1970 and 1986. They pulled a surprising feat in the world cup’s latest edition that upset the soccer community by disgracing the former world champions Germany 1-0 at the group stage.
Otherwise, they are one of the most underperforming teams of the world cup and it shouldn’t come much ad a surprise that they hold this record.
7. The Team With More Own Goals Than Regular Goals- Trinidad And Tobago
One of the Tournament’s unluckiest and worst-performing teams. They were once the least populated participant country in the tournament’s history, displaced by Iceland in 2018. But they are rarely known for the record for which they are included in this list, they have scored more own goals (one), than regular goals (zero). A record that we may yet see broken.
6. Youngest Player To Score An Own Goal- Manuel Rosas.
Manuel Rosas holds the record of the youngest own goal scorer in the Tournament’s history. His unwitting scoring against his team in their match against Chile in the 1930 Fifa World Cup Tournament made the infamous record. In spite of this reputation-tainting mistake, Manuel is known for some quite impressive records, such as the first player to score a goal from a penalty spot, (in a match against Argentina), second youngest to score in Tournament’s history ( after Pelé) and one of the few Mexican players, (indeed the first), to score multiple goals in the history of the Tournament.
5. The Oldest Player To Score An Own Goal- Sergei Ignashevich.
Sergei Ignashevich is a Russian former player who played as a central defender. He has quite an impressive football career. The most capped player in Russia’s team history. Holds a record for the most games played in the Russian Premier League etc.
During the 2018 Tournament, he unwittingly netted a goal against his team while tangling with Sergio Ramos during a corner-set piece, thus creating another infamous record in the Tournament’s history.
4. LatestOwn Goal/Only Own Goal During Extra-time- Jimmy Dickinson
Jimmy Dickinson, netted against his team during a world cup Tournament match ( the 1954 Tournament), between England and Belgium, leveling the game, which ended in a 4-4 draw. This makes Dickinson the only English player to have scored an own goal in the history of the World Cup. He died in 1982, at the age of 57, after a heart attack.
3. The Tournament With The Most Own Goals- The 2018 Tournament
This we hand the most recently concluded edition of the Tournament. Right from its group stage, its own goals started rolling in and the Tournament’s final match also produced an own goal. In total, the 2018 FIFA World Cup Tournament produced 12 own goals, more own goals than any other edition of the tournament has produced.
2. The Fastest Own Goal- Sead Kolasinac
The above-named player is infamous for scoring an own goal in a FIFA World Cup Tournament match between his country, Bosnia–Herzegovina and Argentina. The goal ensured Argentina’s victory over their opponents. Kolasinac’s goal holds the seemingly unbreakable record of the fastest own goal in the history of the FIFA World Cup Tournament.
1. First-Ever Own Goal During A Final Match- Mario Mandžukić’
The 2018 FIFA World Cup trophy well-deservedly went to the French after a heated struggle in a match with the Croatians for the highly coveted prize. The match’s opening goal, (one of the 4 goals counted to the French, which ensured Croatia’s dramatic defeat), was Mario Mandžukić’s own goal, both tragic, unexpected and equally history-making. As of now, till it is broken, remains the only ( also the first) own goal to be scored in a final match in the Tournament’s history.
1. First-Ever Own Goal
The Mexican player Manuel Rosas set this record in a match between Mexico and Chile, at the 1930 FIFA world in Uruguay.
No thanks to Rosas careless mistake the match ended 3-0 in his team’s disfavor
Inspire of this the Mexican has made quite admirable records during his impressive career. He was the first player to score from the penalty spot, and also the youngest player to score in the world cup ( a record formerly held by Pele), and one of the few Mexicans to score multiple goals in the world cup.
Of course, there are other history-making own goals in World Cup history, but this listicle focuses on just those listed above, perhaps the most infamous of all, alongside the negative records they made.
